What is the supervised toothbrushing programme?

The supervised toothbrushing programme is a fun and educational initiative delivered in selected early years settings across Enfield. It helps children aged 3 to 5 learn how to brush their teeth properly with fluoride toothpaste, forming healthy habits that can last a lifetime.

Why is it important?

Tooth decay is one of the most common reasons children are admitted to hospital. Decay and swollen gums can make it difficult for children to eat, sleep and concentrate. It may lead to a delay in speech development, result in missed school days and it can even impact the health of the adult teeth when they come through.

How does the supervised toothbrushing programme work?

Your child’s school or nursery will be offered the opportunity to take part in this programme. If they agree to sign up, your child will:

This does not replace brushing at home – children should still brush twice daily, and to support this, your child has been given a toothbrush and toothpaste to be used at home.
