A message of solidarity following the terrorist attack in Australia

Our thoughts are with all victims and survivors of the horrific incident targeting the Jewish community in Australia. We stand alongside our Jewish communities; Cllr Ergin Erbil, Leader of Enfield Council, has issued the following statement:

"My thoughts and prayers are with Jewish communities in Enfield and across the world following the vicious attack in Bondi Beach, Australia. Antisemitism has no place in our borough or anywhere else, and we stand together against hate.

“This attack comes at a time when London’s Jewish communities are coming together to celebrate Hanukkah. We know it will cause distress and heighten concerns about safety.

“We are working closely with the Metropolitan Police and our partner organisations. The Police are providing an increased presence around synagogues and other community venues in the borough at this important time.

"While there is no information to suggest any link between the attack in Sydney and the threat level in London, we are supporting the Police as they step up their visible presence and carry out additional patrols. We are also engaging with Jewish community leaders to understand what more we can do in the coming days.

“We have not had any reports of increased community tensions in our borough, however we always encourage the public to be vigilant at events and in public places. If you see anything suspicious, trust your instincts and tell the authorities. In an emergency, always call 999.”

The Enfield Borough Resilience Network has also condemned the attack on the Jewish community and, alongside Faith Leaders in the borough have issued the following message of hope and solidarity:

“Political and faith leaders across the borough stand together against violent extremism that impacts on all our communities. Such atrocities have no place in our society and those carrying them out do not represent any of our faiths, religions, or beliefs.

“Our shared thoughts and prayers are with Jewish communities in and around the Enfielld area and across the world following the vicious attack in Bondi Beach, Australia. Antisemitism and all other forms of hatred have no place in our borough or anywhere else.

“Every single life is precious, and we are committed to upholding the dignity and rights of every individual, regardless of ethnicity, culture or faith. We stand united in our commitment to equality and mutual respect for all communities.

“We are one community and as such stand united at this time of grief.”
