Breastfeeding is important for your baby’s health and your own. It can help prevent illness and support the mental wellbeing of parents and children.
To support your feeding journey, Enfield Council offers a free breast pump loan scheme for families in Enfield.
Why use a breast pump?
A breast pump can:
- help you continue breastfeeding for longer
- support bonding with your baby
- make feeding easier if you return to work or face challenges
Who can borrow a breast pump?
You may be eligible if:
- you have financial difficulties buying a breast pump
- you cannot breastfeed directly for a time (for example, if you and your baby are separated)
- your baby needs extra milk (for example, preterm baby or twins)
- a health professional recommends it (GP, midwife, infant feeding team or family hub staff)
- you or your baby have a medical condition (for example, cleft lip/palate or tongue tie)
- hand expression is not suitable or has not worked
- you are returning to work
- your baby is in hospital, and a breast pump is not available
- you have breastfeeding difficulties (such as mastitis or latching problems)
- you are on temporary medication that means you cannot breastfeed
If you want to borrow a breast pump and think you may be eligible, speak to a health professional. This could include a midwife, health visitor, GP practice staff, family hub staff, maternity staff, the Breastfeeding Network (BFN), the infant feeding team, or another health professional.
The loan period for a breast pump is 4 to 6 weeks.
