Hundreds of volunteers supporting town centre clean ups

Hundreds of volunteers across Enfield have been coming together with businesses and residents for town centre clean ups in an effort to encourage communities to take greater pride in their local area.

A number of groups have been awarded funding from a £58,000 pot allocated to Enfield Council by the Ministry of Housing Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) from the Town Centres Clean Up Project Fund.

This grant was made available for councils to work with community groups and volunteers to organise events in support of Keep Britain Tidy’s Great British Spring Clean Campaign and the National High Street Perfect Day.

So far, at least eight successful events have taken place in Enfield with organisations including the Palmers Green Action Team, Enfield Town Business Association, The Enfield Society, CleanUp UK, The Residents of Edmonton Angel Community Together (REACT) and the British Alevi Federation (BAF). These groups have made a phenomenal effort along with Enfield Council to involve local schools, faith groups, youth organisations, Friends of Parks teams, and businesses. The first event took place in Angel Edmonton and more will be rolled out over the summer.

Enfield Council’s Leader, Cllr Nesil Caliskan, said: “High streets are at the centre of our communities and I am delighted that local businesses, community groups and volunteers want to work with us to support them. Litter picking is just the start – through a number of initiatives we hope residents and business owners will take pride in Enfield and will work together with the Council to improve the environment and revitalise areas such as Angel Edmonton, which was a great starting point for this campaign.”

Forthcoming events include:
7 June – Maximus UK and community groups meeting
22 June - Enfield Town Business Association and CleanUp UK family day event
29 June - Enfield Society, Hertford Road District Centre Boundary Clean Up
13 July - Southgate Civic Society, Enfield Society, CleanUp UK and Southgate College town centres clean up event
15 July- BAF and CleanUp UK stickers removal and jet washing in Angel Edmonton

Cllr Caliskan will also be visiting town centres over the coming months to talk to local businesses and community groups and to launch the development of specific action plans which will enable Enfield’s towns to thrive. More details on this to come.
