A brand-new Indoor Rowing Hub has been unveiled to support the expansion of the sport in Enfield for young people.
The new hub will host the borough's first-ever Indoor Rowing League, providing regular inter-school competitions, opportunities to develop skills and build connections with peers.
The launch event held on 6 October welcomed three new schools to the programme, increasing the number of participating schools to seven.
On the day, an artwork commissioned to represent the aspirations of the borough’s young rowers was revealed by artist Chikaora Obiora to further give the hub a vibrant atmosphere.
Luca Ferraro, Under-23 World Champion British Rower and former student of The Latymer School, attended the launch event as the official champion of the Enfield Youth Rowing programme.
Further special guests included The Mayor of Enfield, Cllr Emma Supple, Cabinet Member for Environment, Cllr Maria Alexandrou, alongside supporters from British Rowing, London Youth Rowing, and Youth Charter.
The students participated in a friendly competition and received advice on improving their technique, creating an energetic buzz in the new hub.
Cllr Alexandrou, said: “The new indoor rowing hub is a great stepping stone to providing schools and young people with an opportunity to try a new sport that most would not get to try otherwise. As well as friendly competition, this is a great way to encourage social skills and team work amongst the students!”
Cllr Chris Dey, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, said: “Enfield Council’s Nexus and Active Enfield teams are working together to expand access to high-quality sporting opportunities, strengthening connections between schools and ensuring that even more young people across Enfield can benefit from the life-changing opportunities that sport can provide.”
The new Indoor Rowing Hub will serve as a dedicated space for training, competition and personal development, supporting the continued growth of youth rowing in Enfield and helping more young people become active, confident and engaged in sport.
Active Enfield is delivered by Enfield Council’s Sport & Leisure team, offering sports and health activities for young people, adults and over 50s in the borough.
