Enfield’s first ever London Youth Games Indoor Rowing event took place with forty-nine pupils from schools across Enfield.
The event, aimed at encouraging young people to take up indoor rowing, provided young athletes an opportunity to develop new skills, experience friendly competition and potentially participate in LYG Indoor Rowing competition on 13 June.
On 3 March, Year 7 to Year 11 students attended from Bishop Stopford's School, Enfield County School, Edmonton County School, The Latymer School and Lea Valley Academy.
The initiative, hosted by The Latymer School, was supported by British Rowing and London Youth Rowing. It featured inspirational talks from special guests including Jamila Sinclair, Olympic Pathway Development Coach, Luca Ferraro, a former student of The Latymer School and World Rowing Championships gold medallist, and Councillor Sabri Ozaydin, Cabinet Member for Environment and Placemaking.
Pupils took part in exciting virtual races against others in their year groups, whilst receiving professional coaching tips.
All pupils’ rowing results from the day were submitted to the Virtual Junior Indoor Rowing Championships, giving participants an additional opportunity to benchmark their performances.
Councillor Ozaydin, said: “Thanks to Active Enfield and NEXUS partnership, we can mark the beginning of Enfield’s journey in indoor rowing.
“We hope this launch event inspired our young and talented athletes to discover their passion for sports, teamwork and rowing.
"It was truly amazing to see the energy of young athletes under one roof, giving it their best and participating in the borough’s first indoor rowing event.”
Enfield Council is committed to empowering young people, creating opportunities to foster skills, confidence and increase the chances of success.
