A report to propose free daily 30-minute parking slots, per vehicle, per day, across eligible street parking locations, was unanimously approved by Enfield Council's Cabinet last night.
The proposal has the potential to support the vitality of the borough’s town centres, by encouraging residents to visit Enfield’s high streets and improve access to local shops, services, and businesses.
The scheme would also include all council-operated pay to park car parks, from Monday to Saturday.
The Council will seek residents’ and business owners’ views via a consultation.
The proposal is also subject to call in which is a formal procedure that allows councillors to review a decision made by Cabinet before it takes effect.
Cllr Maria Alexandrou, Cabinet Member for Environment at Enfield Council, said: “I am delighted to bring forward proposals to provide 30 minutes of free parking in the borough.
“Free parking would be a fantastic way of encouraging and increasing visitors to our already thriving town centres and high streets, improve access to services, help businesses to thrive, and attract new investment.
“We would like to hear from as many people as possible on their views of the proposals once the consultation is underway.”
Motorists have a range of parking payment options available, including the PayByPhone cashless service, through shops displaying the PayPoint sign and pre-purchased parking vouchers that will remain in place.
The Council will continue to provide alternative payment methods, including paper parking vouchers available for purchase from libraries and the Parking Shop, ensuring motorists who are unable to use digital payment methods and would like to pay in cash are not disadvantaged.
Blue Badge holders will continue to benefit from the parking concessions available under the national Blue Badge scheme, including the ability to park without a time limit in eligible paid-for parking bays.
Existing Sunday charging arrangements in Enfield Town car parks, including three-hour free parking, will remain.
