Have Your Say on Lower Speed Limits in Enfield

A queue of cars

Enfield Council wants to hear from residents and local businesses about plans to lower speed limits to 20mph on more streets including on roads with schools, in town centres and on most residential roads across the borough.

The goal is to make roads safer, reduce serious accidents, create cleaner air and create more pleasant streets where people feel comfortable walking, cycling, and spending time.

You can now share your thoughts by filling out the Safer Streets for Enfield: 20mph speed limits survey.

Cllr Sabri Ozaydin, Enfield Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment and Placemaking, said: "Making our streets safer and cleaner is a top priority. Please take five minutes to fill in the survey and let us know what you think. Together, we can make Enfield a safer and healthier place for everyone."

Key facts:

  • Main roads like the A10 and North Circular (not managed by the Council) are not included in this plan.
  • People hit by a car at 20mph are five times more likely to survive than if they’re hit at 30mph, according to a Transport for London (TfL) research report published in May
  • Research shows that 20mph zones reduce serious injuries and deaths by 34%.
  • There are 42% fewer road accidents after speed limits are lowered to 20mph.
  • Local data shows speeding was a factor in 61% of crashes in Enfield in the last five years.

The Mayor of London's Vision Zero plan aims to end deaths and serious injuries on London’s roads. Enfield Council is committed to helping achieve this.

Slower traffic also helps town centres by making them more attractive and welcoming to people on foot or bike, helping local shops and cafes thrive.

You can fill in the survey online or alternatively email: journeysandplaces@enfield.gov.uk; post a letter to: Journeys and Places, Enfield Council, Civic Centre, Silver Street, EN1 3XA, or pick up and return a paper survey from local libraries or Enfield Civic Centre.

The deadline to respond is Sunday, 21 September 2025 at 11:59pm.
