Enfield Council has taken a bold step in addressing public health concerns through the introduction of its new Healthy Advertising Policy, designed to encourage a healthier lifestyle for residents and help reduce obesity.
Under the new guidelines agreed by the Cabinet, all advertising spaces controlled by Enfield Council will be free from advertisements for foods high in fat, sugar and salt. This supports the Council’s initiative of encouraging healthier eating habits and its work to improve children’s dental health in the borough.
The advertising policy has been introduced in response to national and local statistics concerning obesity in young people and adults. Evidence shows that adverts for unhealthy food and drink products directly and indirectly impact what we eat.*
This policy aligns with broader initiatives across the country aimed at reducing healthcare burdens and fostering healthier communities.
Councillor Alev Cazimoglu, Cabinet Member for Health and Social Care, said: “This policy is particularly important for children who are often targeted with advertising for unhealthy foods. The adoption of Enfield’s Healthier Food Advertising Policy marks a significant step towards fostering a healthier environment for our residents. This initiative aligns with our commitment to public health and reflects the strong steps we are taking to address health inequalities in our borough.”
