About the trial
We’re running a short-term trial with ReLondon to help people living in flats recycle more food waste and reduce the amount that goes into general rubbish.
One of the main barriers is moving food waste easily from the kitchen to a communal food bin. This trial tests different ways of providing liners to make this easier.
Where the trial is taking place
The trial is running in a small number of selected blocks with communal recycling facilities.
If your block is taking part, you will:
- receive the food waste leaflet (PDF, 1970.78 KB) at your address
- see new signs in your bin store
What you may notice in your bin store or entrance hall
Depending on your block, you may see one or more of the following:
- rolls of liners you can take to line your kitchen caddy
- a liner dispenser in your bin store, where you can take a liner when you empty your caddy into the food waste bin
- a liner dispenser in your entrance hall near the lift, where you can take a liner when you empty your caddy into the food waste bin
What we’re asking residents to do
If you live in a trial block, please:
- keep using the food waste service and put food waste in the food waste bin in your bin store
- start using the service if you have not used it before, and collect liners from your bin store or entrance hall. If you do not have a kitchen caddy, you can order one using the online form below.
- use the liners provided to keep your kitchen caddy clean and make recycling easier. When you run out, collect more.
- follow the bin store signs and put the right items in the right bins to reduce contamination
- let us know if there are any problems, such as liners running out, bins needing emptying, or if you want to give feedback

Why we’re running this trial
Recycling rates in flats are often lower than in houses. Communal bin stores can be less convenient to use.
This trial will help us understand what works best in Enfield. The results will help us improve recycling services in flats and support the wider rollout of Simpler Recycling.
How we will measure success
We will assess the trial in several ways, which may include:
- surveys with residents before and after the trial
- monitoring how full bins are or how much waste they collect
- checking contamination levels in recycling bins
- tracking how often reusable sacks are used and replaced
- tracking liner usage at participating blocks
