Visiting Barrowell Green
If you have recycling or extra waste, you can take it to Barrowell Green Recycling Centre. But you must book an appointment before you go.
At the centre, you can recycle or dispose of things like garden waste, metal, electrical items, and other household rubbish.

This site does not accept any trade or commercial waste at any time.
Before you visit
You must agree to:
- reuse or recycle items if you can, before throwing them away as rubbish
- book an appointment in advance
- show a valid permit if you’re using a van, trailer, or pick-up truck
- only bring accepted items
- remain safe – follow all safety rules and staff instructions
- keep children and pets inside your vehicle at all times
- ask staff for help if you need it
Booking an appointment
- You must book an appointment to enter the site by vehicle
- Pedestrians do not need an appointment
- Vans, trailers, or pick-up trucks, need a permit as well

Barrowell Green Recycling Centre is open from Tuesday to Sunday, between 8am to 4pm.
The centre is closed on Mondays.
What you can take to Barrowell Green
We accept most household recycling and rubbish that cannot be recycled or reused at Barrowell Green Recycling Centre. However, we do not accept commercial waste at any time.
Could your item be reused?
Before you recycle or throw something away, stop and think can someone else use it?
Our on-site Revive Shop accepts items that others can buy and use again. You can also shop there for second hand items.
Items we accept:
- Batteries – household and car
- Cans, tins and aerosols
- Cardboard
- Carpet and rugs
- Cooking and engine oil (up to 10 litres per month)
- Small electrical items (such as TVs, hairdryers, radios, irons)
- Food and drinks cartons (must be clean)
- Fridges and freezers (not large American style)
- Furniture (see POPs guidance)
- Garden waste (no plant pots or soil)
- Glass bottles and jars
- Lighting bulbs and tubes
- Paper
- Plasterboard and Gypsum (dry and free of timber or brick)
- Plastic bottles
- Rubbish (non-recyclable items only)
- Rubble and hardcore (up to 6 builder's sacks per household per month)
- Scrap metal
- Vapes
- Wood and timber (if DIY rubbish, up to 6 builder's sacks per household per month)
Items we do not accept:
- Asbestos
- Corrosive products
- Chemicals
- Paint
- Gas bottles
- Hazardous waste
- Plaster
- Plasterboard with other materials attached
- Tyres
- Wet plasterboard
Please note – sometimes we may not be able to accept certain items for recycling temporarily. You can still dispose of them at the site or find another recycling option.
Persistent Organic Pollutants
We now separate certain waste items that contain Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs).
Commercial vehicle permits
Barrowell Green Recycling Centre does not accept commercial waste.
If you’re bringing your own household waste to the site in a commercial-type vehicle, you must have a valid vehicle permit before you book your visit appointment.
Permits are free of charge.
Vehicles that need a permit:
- Vans
- Trailers
- Pick-up trucks
- Taxis and minibuses (unlicensed) with more than 7 seats
- Ambulances (unless in an emergency)
When applying, you will need to tell us your vehicle’s:
- registration number
- make, model and colour
You will still need to book an appointment to visit the centre, even with your vehicle permit.
Trailers
If you're towing a trailer, also include:
- trailer length (in metres)
- make, model and colour of both the trailer and towing vehicle
- make, model and colour of the trailer
- number of trailer axles
- trailer vehicle registration
Hiring a vehicle
If you’re hiring a vehicle, you will need to tell us this in your application. You will also need to bring the hire documents with you when you visit.
Important things to know
- You still need to book an appointment to visit the centre, even with a permit
- Bring your permit and photo ID when you arrive
- A permit does not guarantee you will be allowed to dispose of your waste – normal site rules still apply
- If approved, you will get 6 permits per year for your vehicle or any hired vehicle
- Permits are sent by post and should arrive within 10 working days
- If you change address or vehicle, you must tell us – otherwise your permits may be cancelled
- Lost or damaged permits may be replaced at our discretion

Revive shop
The Revive shop sells good-quality items donated by local people to help reduce waste and encourage recycling.
Before you recycle or throw something away, stop and think – could someone else use it?
Reusing items helps the environment by reducing the need to extract and process raw materials. This saves energy, reduces pollution and helps fight climate change. It also means people who cannot afford new things can still get what they need.

What we cannot accept:
- Items that are broken or very dirty
- Electrical items (we cannot currently safety test electrical items for resale)
- Anything offensive or racist
