Understanding Domestic Abuse & Coercive Control

Understanding Domestic Abuse and Coercive Control

Telling someone about the abuse is one of the hardest things a survivor will ever have to do. This is why the way we respond to and address a disclosure of domestic abuse is crucial. In this training we will review the definitions and prevalence of domestic abuse in the UK, learn about some of the developments introduced by the Domestic Abuse Act 2021, cover the impact that abuse can have on survivors and what barriers to reporting may be. We will review some of the do’s and don’ts of responding to a disclosure and how to help survivors access the specialist support they need.

Following this training, participants will:

  • Have a deeper understanding of domestic abuse and its legal frame
  • Gain insight into the barriers facing survivors trying to access support
  • Feel more confident to respond to disclosures and refer survivors to the best sources of specialist support
