HEALTH & SOCIAL CARE PRACTITIONERS - Gaming & Gambling Awareness and Harm Prevention Workshop

PLEASE NOTE THIS TRAINING IS FOR HEALTH & SOCIAL CARE PRACTITIONERS ONLY.

To enable professionals to have proactive conversations with children and young people in relation to digital wellbeing, with particular focus on gaming and gambling harms.

To  focus on identifying and signposting individuals with gambling related harm, whilst acknowledging that professionals do not always know where to signpost, and that the impact of self-stigma is a key barrier to individuals seeking help. The training is suitable for mental health practitioners, counsellors, psychologists, safeguarding staff, nurses, social prescribers, and any other role in a healthcare setting.

92% of young people play video games, with 30% saying that they play for more than 3.5 hours a day. In the past gambling and gaming could be easily separated, but the lines have now become increasingly blurred, with young people gambling on microtransactions such a loot boxes, and skin betting (cosmetic items in a game). Young people are bombarded by advertising through social media and sports partnerships with gambling brands, with people between the ages of 18-24 at the highest risk of developing gambling harms.

Our 2-hour interactive online training session includes several case studies compiled with experts by experience. Topics include:

  • How young people are increasingly exposed to gaming and gambling harm.
  • The influence of advertising, particularly around sporting events.
  • the role of social media, in game purchases, loot boxes and Esports.
  • Decision making ability in young adults and motivation theories for gaming.
  • Guilt shame and stigma.
  • Signs of harm, conversations, planning and signposting.

Learning outcomes:

  • Improve your knowledge of gaming, gambling, and the associated harms
  • Be able to identify factors which increase the vulnerability of CYP to gaming and/or gambling harms
  • Develop the skills to enable you to have meaningful conversations about gaming and gambling
