Challenging Disproportionality: Risk Assessing for young black children

Overview, the aim of the workshop

This 4 hour session workshop allows practitioners to explore and build on existing skills and knowledge for risk assessing and working with young people to complete safety plans.

The sessions will focus on equipping practitioners to risk assess and support young people to complete safety plans for themselves.

Black young people, particularly black boys, are experiencing additional risks, thus bringing more complex dynamics to the assessment process.  Therefore practitioners and others need to be proficient in considering and weighing up issues such as individual, familial, community/contextual risks on the impact on the behaviours of the child/young person (aggression, bullying, violence, absconding and sexualised etc.), the vulnerability of the child/young person (low attainment, NEET, teenage pregnancy, exploitation, abuse, criminal activity, emotional issues,  substance misuse, death and social exclusion etc. ), and environmental risks (parks, schools, community spaces, toilets, school routes, stairwells, bus terminus, play spaces, changing rooms etc.) all concerning the safeguarding/protection/ care of the young person.

We will discuss and identify ways forward for completing both a Dynamic Risk Assessment for the young person and completing a Safety Plan.
