White Ribbon Day will be marked this year by Enfield Council with a series of events aimed at raising awareness, challenging negative behaviours, and preventing male violence against women and girls.
White Ribbon is the UK's leading campaign engaging men and boys in the fight against gender-based violence. The awareness day is observed on 25 November and marks the beginning of 16 days of activism.
This year, the Council is hosting a range of opportunities to engage with and educate the community. To start, the Council hosted a conference on White Ribbon Day itself (pictured), bringing together professionals and local organisations.
The event was officially opened by Cllr Gina Needs, Cabinet Member for Community Cohesion and Enforcement.
The conference also allowed women to share their personal experiences, foster collaboration and continue the development of strategies to address the root causes of male violence against women and girls.
Cllr Gina Needs urges the community to unite in support of White Ribbon Day. She said: “Violence experienced by women and girls takes many forms. Some behaviours and words may seem ‘harmless’ but normalising them ignores the short and long-term effects on women and can lead to more extreme violence.
“Come and support White Ribbon Day by attending one of our youth centre or library events and help make a difference towards ending violence against women and girls.”
Residents are also encouraged to participate in various events during the 16 Days of Activism. These are designed to promote awareness and support for the White Ribbon campaign and include:
- White Ribbon Day Coffee Morning: Join us on Wednesday 27 November at Enfield Town Library, 66 Church Street, from 10am to 11.30am. This event offers a safe space for adults to discuss gender-based violence, hear from survivors, and learn about available support services. Due to limited space, please register in advance by emailing libraryservices@enfield.gov.uk
- Youth Engagement Events: Three events aimed at young people aged 11 to 19 (up to 25 with SEND) will be held at Ponders End and Craig Park youth and family hubs. Activities include:
- Gender Equality and Healthy Relations Project Day: Monday 25 November, featuring discussions, debates, and workshops
- Creative Workshops: Monday 2 December, where young people can create vision boards, arts and crafts, and T-shirt designs with messages against violence
- Film and Role-Play Workshops: Monday 9 December, focusing on creating short films and role-playing scenarios to deepen understanding of gender-based violence
The youth engagement events specifically aim to empower young people to voice their opinions on gender equality, understand their rights, and learn about healthy relationships.
As part of showing the Local Authority’s ongoing support, Enfield Council has also been re-accredited as a White Ribbon Day supporter organisation, reaffirming its commitment to creating a safe and equal environment for all.
As a symbol of the Council’s support for the White Ribbon values and as proud ambassadors, the campaign flag will fly outside the Civic Centre for 16 days.
