Enfield Council’s commitment to tackling the climate emergency has been recognised at an awards ceremony highlighting its work to provide sustainable, climate-friendly energy solutions.
Energetik, ENGIE, Kensa Contracting and the Council won the ‘Domestic’ and ‘Project of the Year’ categories at the Decentralised Energy Awards 2019 on 31 October.
In addition, the Association for Decentralised Energy Champion Award was given to Energetik’s Dennis King, in recognition for going above and beyond in the service of the energy industry.
The authority is taking bold action with regards Council operations and buildings, commercial and community tenants and investing in renewable energy initiatives. In July, Enfield Council declared a state of climate emergency and its Climate Change Task Force is meeting regularly to investigate how the Council itself will become a carbon neutral organisation by 2030.
Enfield Council set up Energetik in 2015 to deliver four low carbon heat networks, and its Sustainability team has delivered England’s largest heat pump system.
The Deputy Leader of Enfield Council, Cllr Ian Barnes, said: “All these projects form part of Enfield Council’s plan to address the implications of the climate emergency and to also deliver social, health and environmental benefits to those living and working in Enfield. In everything we do, we will with the guidance of the Climate Change Task Force promote sustainable design and implement green infrastructure while also addressing issues related to fuel poverty which affects thousands of residents.”
The projects with Kensa and Engie demonstrate a blueprint for the future of tower block heating using heat pumps, a ground-breaking milestone for ground source technology and the renewable energy industry as a whole.
Energetik is fully focused on customer engagement, fuel poverty and the climate emergency. It works with customers to help them understand their energy use, manage their spending and explains how its technology is helping tackle the climate emergency.
Energetik will eventually supply over 15,000 homes in Enfield with low carbon heat and hot water through a series of heat networks. It currently has four separate operational developments, with the largest, Meridian Water Heat Network, due to come online in the next 18-24 months.
