Edmonton street art wows walkers and cyclists

Residents were encouraged to hit the pavement on World Car Free Day (22 September) and explore the hidden gems of Enfield, including an incredible new piece of street art.

The newly spray-painted animal-themed mural at the junction of Latymer Road and Church Street in Edmonton is designed to be fun and engaging.

The mural was jointly commissioned by Cycle Enfield and the RSPCA, which has a clinic in Edmonton, and is located opposite the entrance to Latymer All Saints Church of England Primary School.

Enfield Council’s Deputy Leader, Cllr Daniel Anderson, said: “Awareness events such as Car Free Day offer us all an opportunity to pause and reflect on the detrimental health impact of air pollution, but also to rediscover our neighbourhoods.

“Along with new rain gardens, fresh paving, more seating, a 20mph zone extension and a zebra cycle crossing on Church Street, we hope residents will think twice about using their cars for short journeys.

“Together with the mural, the works at this junction amply demonstrate the Council’s ongoing commitment to create healthy streets which are safe and accessible, enabling residents to get around on foot and bike to experience the sights and sounds of our wonderful borough.”

Up the road from the school, a new cycling hub has also opened at Edmonton Green, designed to be used by commuters and visitors to shops and nearby amenities. In addition, the Edmonton Heritage Trail received a face-lift over the summer and now includes a number of historical treats for people to explore.

Cllr Yasemin Brett, the Cabinet Member for Public Health added: “According to the walking charity Living Streets, 40,000 premature deaths each year in the UK are attributable to air pollution. We want to promote active, sustainable and independent travel for all and to encourage healthier choices.”

In addition, October is Walk to School Month, so there are plenty of opportunities to get out of the car, get fit, and explore the borough. For more information on health, go to Enfield's health and wellbeing website and on cycling see Journey and Places website.
