Bowes Primary School in Bowes Road (N11), has been awarded Asthma Friendly School status by the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust.
A special Asthma Friendly School certificate was presented to Headteacher Rebecca Moore and pupils, by Cllr Chris Dey and Cllr Andy Milne in recognition, at a celebration at the school on 9 September.
Bowes Primary is the first school in the borough to be awarded the status under Enfield Council’s Asthma Friendly Schools programme, to help schools support young people to manage their asthma more effectively.
NHS Asthma Friendly School programmes focus includes having an asthma policy, maintaining an asthma register, ensuring emergency asthma medication is available, and all children with the condition have an individual asthma action plan.
Staff at an Asthma Friendly School will understand asthma, know how to respond quickly if a child becomes unwell, and ensure children with asthma can participate safely in all aspects of school life.
Cllr Chris Dey, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services at Enfield Council, said: “I am pleased that Bowes Primary has achieved Asthma Friendly School status, that demonstrates their knowledge of the condition and their commitment to helping pupils manage their asthma.
“I hope that more schools in the borough take up the offer of becoming an Asthma Friendly School, and we look forward to continuing our working partnership with the NHS to deliver such an important and potentially lifesaving project.”
Eunice Chigwanda, Community Clinical Service Lead for Babies, Children and Young People (BCYP) 0-19 at Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust, said: "Our school nursing service has been working closely with Enfield Council and schools across the borough to strengthen asthma awareness and ensure that pupils with asthma receive the right support.

In June, the Council commissioned Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust to deliver Asthma Friendly Schools as part of the NHS' school health service in Enfield.
A further 13 schools in the borough are working towards achieving Asthma Friendly School status.
All Enfield schools will be given the opportunity to join the programme, but a decision on whether to participate is made on an individual basis.
Asthma is a common condition that affects breathing. In the UK, 7.2 million people have asthma which is approximately 8 in every 100 people.
