Flood protection boost for Enfield with more than £1 million funding for projects

More than £1 million in funding has been secured by Enfield Council to deliver a series of flood alleviation projects across the borough, helping to protect residents, homes and infrastructure from the growing impact of climate change.

The funding, confirmed by the Environment Agency for the 2026/27 financial year, will support a range of projects in both urban and rural areas. These include:

  • Salmons Brook Natural Flood Management at Enfield Chase
  • Bullsmoor Lane Flood Alleviation Scheme
  • Enfield Playing Fields Wetlands
  • Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) for schools programme for Grange Park Primary, Highlands, De Bohun and Eversley Schools

The investment forms part of Enfield’s long-term strategy to reduce flood risk across the borough. The programme will deliver a range of benefits, including better protection for homes and businesses, the creation of new wetlands and natural habitats and improvements to local waterways. Projects such as natural flood management and SuDS will also play a key role in slowing the flow of water, reducing pressure on drainage systems and improving biodiversity.

The funding has been made possible through partnership working between Enfield Council, the Environment Agency and the Department for Education.

Cllr Sabri Ozaydin, Cabinet Member for Environment and Placemaking, said: “This significant investment is a major step forward in our work to protect Enfield residents from the increasing risks of flooding caused by climate change. We are proud to be working with partners to deliver innovative projects that not only reduce flood risk but also enhance our natural environment and create greener, healthier spaces for our communities. From wetlands and natural flood management schemes to sustainable drainage in schools, this programme reflects our long-term commitment to building a more resilient Enfield.”

The funding announcement was confirmed by the Environment Agency as part of the national investment programme for 2026/27, known as the Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management Grant-in-Aid.

Work on the projects in Enfield is expected to progress throughout the upcoming financial year.
