Critically acclaimed independent films to headline in Enfield

Every Saturday this July, Dugdale Arts Centre (DAC) will transform into an international movie theatre to showcase award-winning films as part of Rumours of Spring, a month-long film festival.

Following the theme of Hope for the Future, the critically acclaimed films, produced by women filmmakers, highlight the extraordinary journeys of ordinary women and girls from around the world.

The headlining films include the global hits Made in Bangladesh (2019), Trans Kashmir (2022), and more. In addition to the screenings, audiences can dive deeper with panel discussions, followed by light bites and meals from the film’s culture at the DAC Cafe. They can further participate in Q&As with filmmakers and explore two art installations, including an interactive exhibition by British-Kashmiri artist Hussina Raja.

As part of the programme, Rumours of Spring will also be hosting a Romeo and Juliet ‘Song Play’ workshop, which explores the traditional South Asian Palagan (song play) style of theatre.

Cllr Chinelo Anyanwu, Cabinet Member for Culture and Inclusion, said: “July will be a jam-packed month for residents to discover award-winning international cinema without having to step outside the borough. It’s very important that we collaborate with our partners and champion initiatives like this.

“Not only will it create a stronger sense of community, but it will also strengthen and enrich cultural opportunities across the borough. Whether you’re a film fanatic or a curious individual, the film festival is a great way to connect, learn, and immerse yourself in the line-up of diverse films.”

Running from 5 to 26 July, residents can purchase an individual ticket for £6.50 or a Festival Pass for £24.00.

Enfield Council recognises the importance of arts and culture in the borough and is committed to supporting the continued growth of the UK’s screen industries.

The film festival was made possible through BFI National Lottery Funding and in collaboration with Enfield Council’s community partners, including BFI Film Audience Network, Talkies Community Cinema, Mukul and Ghetto Tigers, Tamarind Theatre, Day-mer Centre, Kashmiri Cultural Society, South Asian Solidarity Group, and SOAS. Some activities in this programme are supported by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF).
