Emergency Hormonal Contraception
A number of pharmacies across the borough provide free Emergency Hormonal Contraception (EHC)
under the National Pharmacy Contraception Scheme (PCS).
This is the quickest and easiest way to receive EHC treatment and does not require an appointment however it is best to check if the pharmacist is available before you go.
Levonorgestrel can be taken up to 96 hours (4 days) and EllaOne up to 120 hours (5 days) after unprotected sex, but they are most effective if taken as soon as possible.
Other Emergency Contraception (not part of the EHC Scheme):
The coil – provided it is inserted within 5 days of unprotected sex to prevent pregnancy.
Emergency contraception does not protect against sexually transmitted infections.
