Transition easier overview
Making transition easier
The Newbury transition team will work in schools in Enfield with both individuals and groups. Groupwork is available for up to 8 Year 7 learners per half term.
The aims are to:
- introduce learners to new skills and opportunities that will make transition into secondary school a success
- make an impact on changing and modifying behaviours and attitudes towards learning during and beyond their time at school
- enable the learner to achieve a sense of success and pride within the curriculum offered
- develop the learners’ social, emotional, and behavioural skills
The desired outcomes are:
- to be able to navigate their way through secondary school independently and effectively
- improved outcomes for the learner in behaviour, attendance, punctuality, progress
- to raise attainment and raise the aspirations of the individual learner
- identification of any SEN of the learner working with the transition team
- signposting of additional support for schools/families
- support for parents/carers in all aspects of their child’s life
- a reduction in the need for schools to use alternative provision as a long-term solution to full time education
- a reduction in suspensions and permanent exclusions in KS3
Learner criteria
- Year 7
- Learners whose behaviour has been identified as causing concern within the school
- Learners cannot have an EHCP in place at time of referral
The process
- Referral from school via Outreach referral form
- Newbury team to take on referral and allocate mentor to that school
- Mentor to contact school to make 1:1 or group plan
- Groups to run for 6 to 7weeks depending on the length of term
- 1:1 sessions to last a minimum of 6 weeks
Timetable
- Group timetable - weekly
- Session time will depend on the timetable and requirements of the school
- 1:1 Individual mentoring session- weekly
- Session time will be during an agreed lesson, meaning less disruption to the learner
In the academic year 23-24, the transition team worked collaboratively with SWERL to produce and run a 6-week joint Secondary transition project for year 6 learners. 9 learners were selected by the primary schools and by SWERL to attend. They experienced 2 weeks based at SWERL and 4 weeks at Newbury. For the first 4 weeks of the learners’ transition into secondary school, the transition team will be supporting once a week in a mentoring capacity.
Focus: A secondary transition project using the Arts as a vehicle. Pupils to use photography, collage, and digital art to express their inner and outer world to strengthen healthy positive choices moving forward into their secondary school. Using the phyco-Curriculum model pupils will visit different areas to strengthen healthy choices and resilience through a mix medium digital art project.
This project was very successful and 100% of the learners secured a place in a local Enfield secondary school.
Behaviour support
Group sessions
The Newbury team to run weekly group sessions and feedback to school regarding the overall success of each session.
1:1 support
Each learner will have an allocated mentor from the Newbury team that will visit them in school and keep up to date mentoring records of the sessions. Mentors will provide feedback to the school with updates and progress at the end of the agreed timeframe with that learner. If any concerns arise in the sessions, then the mentor will communicate these with the school.
