Ten tips for talking to your child about sex and relationships

We know that parents want to do the best they can for their children, but sometimes family life can be challenging and difficult.

Some people feel that talking to young people about sex might encourage them to start experimenting, but research has shown the opposite to be true. Good sex and relationship education can in fact prevent early sexual activity.

Parent Support Service

Aim to support parents/ carers in areas such as:

Communicating and building relationships with teenagers, including advice on sex and relationship guidance, health issues, substance misuse, involvement with negative peer groups.

Offering practical advice on managing challenging behaviour while encouraging good behaviour, setting boundaries and understanding child and adolescent development.

Concerns around education, (attendance, homework, truancy, getting children up and out for school in the morning and achievement).

Advice and encouragement around mealtimes, play, bedtime routines, curfews and budgeting.
