A Direct Payment is a payment made to people who would normally receive community care services from the Council, enabling them to arrange and buy their own services.

Direct Payments mean that people have more independence, control, choice and flexibility on how services are arranged.

You can only receive Direct Payments once you have been assessed as someone who needs and qualifies for help from the Council.

Who qualifies for Direct Payments?

Direct Payments can be made to:

    • older people.
    • people with a learning disability.
    • people with a physical disability.
    • people with a sensory impairment.
    • people with a long term illness.
    • people with mental health problems.
    • a carer, aged 18 or over, who cares for someone who has needs as described above
    • an adult with parental responsibility for a child who has a disability.
