Take action for an Olympics to remember
Date and Time of Publication:- 2008-11-20 13:19:33This week Enfield Council’s draft Olympics Strategy appears on the council’s website so that the public can make their views known to the council over the next two months.
This consultation ends on 5th January 2009. It will provide information for a fuller and final document enabling the council to prepare for the London 2012 Olympic Games, Paralympic Games and their legacy
Cllr Jon Kaye, cabinet member for leisure, culture and Olympics, said, “Enfield borders the Olympic borough of Waltham Forest. As London’s northernmost borough Enfield’s excellent transport links place residents and businesses in a unique position to benefit from the Games.
“Our vision for the Games is to ensure that both the London 2012 Olympic Games & Paralympic Games are remembered not just for providing the best ever sporting and cultural festival, but also for bringing the best ever legacy that meets local expectations – so we really want to get as many local views as possible.”
The Draft Strategy has five aims:
1 Maximising volunteering and training opportunities for residents
2 Engaging with local schools, colleges and young people
3 Building on and expanding opportunities to participate in sports and cultural activities for all of our communities
4 Maximising regeneration and employment opportunities especially in the leisure industries
5 Developing the Council’s structures and community sector capacity to deliver the Olympic legacy
There are also a number of proposed actions.
The 2012 Games will embrace the Olympic philosophy to celebrate sport, culture and education, to create unique opportunities and inspire a lasting legacy for London and the rest of the UK.
Cllr Kaye, continued, “The Olympic Games offer opportunities in so many ways. Already young people have been inspired by the performances of British athletes who did so well at Beijing and many are working hard to do well in sports and cultural activities.
“Our draft strategy is just the start of a programme of activity to enhance our borough and excite the enthusiasm of all our residents.”
The Olympic Strategy will help the council set priorities for making the most of this unique opportunity and ensuring an enduring legacy for Enfield.
