‘What one thing can the council do to increase young people’s opportunities?’ Over 60 young people from local Enfield secondary schools will be debating this key question this Friday in the Enfield Council Chamber as a day of intensive workshops end.

Responding to an alarming number of youth murders in the borough, Enfield Council set up a special scrutiny commission to look at ways to improve young people’s life opportunities and tackle some deep-rooted problems.

These young people will express their views and share their experiences and expertise on solving anti-social behaviour creating better opportunities.

Apart from a number of workshops and presentations, the scrutiny panel members will be taking evidence from the meeting to the full council.

Six local councillors, the police borough commander, head teachers from Raynham Primary School and The Gladys Aylward Secondary School and an assistant director of children’s services from the NHS sit on the commission.

Commission chairman, Cllr Martin Prescott, said, “We need to go to the heart of the matter and do whatever is necessary to bring about lasting change. We want to hear what young people have to say, understand how they feel and see if the council and its partners can make real improvements for them. Life needs living without fear.” -ends-
