Enfield’s Philip Waller, John Lowry, Daniel Greene and George Worton are squash champions for the third year running in the recent London Youth Games held at Redbridge Sports Centre.

In their first game against Kingston, they took no time in recording three straight 3-0 victories. The next match against Barnet was another comfortable 3-0 victory.

A greater challenge was their semi final against neighbouring borough team Haringey but they held their nerve and secured a clear 3-0 victory.

In the final against Merton the boys did really well and only dropped one game in all their matches and came out with a roaring team score of 3-0, securing 50 points for Enfield for their major win.

Trainer and team manager, Mark Worton, said, “I would like to congratulate them on their outstanding victory and not only brought back gold medals, but also won a fair play award for the conduct of the playing.”

Despite a gallant effort the girls adventure came to an abrupt halt as they missed out qualifying by one point! The team was clearly disappointed but the boy’s success cheered them up.

The girls secured a commendable 5th position at the event securing a valuable 39 points for Enfield. Well done to Poppy Manze our most improved player, Ffion May and Hazel Vickers.

Mark praised the girls’ team. He said, “Well done to the girls, who got off to a bad start, finished strongly, but did not qualify to the finals missing out by one point. Well done to Poppy Manze, Ffion May and Hazel Vickers, I know they will be back next year much stronger.

“Thanks to Hazelwood Squash & Tennis Club for the use of their courts and Enfield Sports development team for their continued support.”

Cllr Jon Kaye, cabinet member for leisure, culture and Olympics, said, “It is wonderful that we have so many gifted youngsters willing to learn new sports. Congratulations to the boys. Like their trainer, Mark, I am sure that the girls’ team will return next year hungry for the challenge.”

This summer there are opportunities to get active in a range of exciting sports in leisure centres, parks, schools and estates. Enfield’s sports development has planned an exciting packed programme. Call 020 8379 3762 for information.
