ENFIELD Council is offering a £1, 000 reward for the conviction of those who stole the plaque commemorating a local war hero.

The Council decided to offer the reward after it heard of the news that thieves had stolen the brass plaque, which was placed in Enfield Crematorium in memory of Corporal Darren Bonner, who was killed in action in Afghanistan in 2007.

Cpl Bonner, who was originally from Enfield, served in the 1st Battalion Royal Anglian Regiment.

It is believed the plaque was stolen to sell as scrap metal.

Councillor Terry Neville, cabinet member for environment said: "This is an absolutely despicable act which plumbs the depths of greed and wickedness.

“These callous thieves must have known this man had died in action for his country but all they saw was a opportunity to line their own pockets.

"Enfield Council will be offering a £1000 reward for any information which has led to the conviction of whoever stole Corporal Bonner's plaque."

Enfield Council's enviro crime unit is now actively contacting scrap metal merchants in the borough to see if the thieves have approached them.

Cllr Neville said: "At the same time I urge any scrap metal merchants to contact the police or the council immediately to enable us to track down these sick individuals.”

If you have any information which could lead to the arrest and successful prosecution of the thieves contact Enfield Council on 020 8379 1000 and ask to speak to the Enviro Crime Unit.
