Olympic flag flies at the Civic Centre

Enfield’s young athletes raise the flag for 2012.

When Boris Johnson, Mayor for London received the Olympic flag at the recent handover of the Olympic Games from Beijing to London, boroughs across the capital held their own handover celebrations.

In Enfield, Amy Johnston, Johanna Willard & Beth Grimsey, from Enfield & Haringey Athletics Club, helped Council Leader Mike Rye and Cllr Eric Jukes raise the London 2012 Olympic Flag high above the Civic Centre.

Amy, Beth and Johanna were members of Enfield’s successful 2008 London Youth Games Athletics squad, which secured the gold medal at Europe’s largest youth sports event.

Cllrs Rye and Jukes presented them with their gold medals at the Enfield celebration.

Cllr Rye, said, “It was indeed a great pleasure to present these three Enfield stars with their medals and I am confident that their medal winning will set a trend for 2012.”

Many of Britain’s greatest Olympians started their athletic careers at the London Youth Games.

Representatives from Ellenborough Table Tennis Club and Enfield’s Mini-Games bronze medal winning football team were also present at the Flag raising organised by Enfield’s sports development team.
