Enfield’s enviro chief has issued a challenge to residents to recycle ten million cans by the end of the Summer to help save enough energy to light up North London.

Councillor Terry Neville – cabinet member for environment said: “Enfield has one of the best recycling rates in London but can and must do more.

“As part of this new big push on recycling we have set residents a challenge – to recycle ten million by the end of the Summer. It sounds like a tough ask but it’s only 36 cans each.”

Enfield residents recycle 28.8 million cans last financial year – that’s 103 cans each.

Cllr Neville – said: “Recycling has become even more important now Britain and the world is entering the biggest energy crisis since the seventies.

“If Enfield’s 280, 000 residents met our ten million can challenge it would save enough energy to power 1.4 million homes in one day – that’s probably enough to light up the whole of North London!”

The target date – 20 September – is the official end of British Summer Time.
