Cabinet members agree to £2.5 million improvement for Millfield

There are exciting days ahead for the Millfield Arts complex in Edmonton which includes Millfield Theatre, Millfield House and associated premises.

Last night Enfield Council’s cabinet members agreed proposals that will transform these buildings so that a night out at any of the Edmonton venues would be a truly memorable experience.

Recommendations include:

Creating a new bar/ restaurant facility and possibly a community space which would support the theatre;

Improving the exhibition, lecture and conference facilities at Millfield House; and

Improving the toilet facilities at Millfield Theatre to include disabled facilities and relocating the cramped bar.

In the last three years Millfield Theatre has attracted greater audience numbers with regular full houses. Filled to capacity the theatre holds 362 people and this places a strain on the small bar and six toilets.

To build on the theatre’s growing success, the council wants to improve the facilities for its customers by expanding facilities for the theatre with a bar, restaurant and additional toilets, plus Internet access and community space outside of theatre opening times.

Millfield House is a Grade II listed building providing educational facilities, meeting rooms, exhibition space and catering facilities.

Situated in landscaped gardens within the complex it is a haven of culture and learning among the dense housing and busy North Circular Road.

Costings for the refurbishment of the Millfield Complex are in the region of £2.5 million, with an estimated completion by May/June 2010.

Cllr Jon Kaye, cabinet member for leisure, culture and Olympics, said, “As a local arts centre Millfield represents a golden opportunity for the local community to enjoy theatre, exhibitions, to meet and to have a good night out.

“Often described as a gem in the busy North Circular Road, Millfield, once refurbished, will make the whole area sparkle with renewed ambition.

“As London prepares for the 2012 Olympics we must not forget the cultural element to it and what we can offer from Edmonton.”
