Young voices have mighty words
Date and Time of Publication:- 2008-03-14 11:31:05Power and passion, wit and wisdom, were the order of the day as eight young speakers from Oakthorpe Primary School in Palmers Green, took the stage in the school’s annual speech contest.
Profound subjects on recycling, bullying, healthy eating and fair trade mixed with lighter topics where children could choose to speak about their great loves or hates.
The eight and nine olds taking part, years 3 and 4, put in fine performances and gave the judges a difficult time deciding who should win.
Head teacher, Geoff Cumner-Price, said, “Our annual speech contest is very popular and our children really give their very best. They are always entertaining and use humour well to make important points.
“They were terrific at communicating their ideas through their speeches and showed a very good grasp of their subjects.”

In year four the four finalists were:

Student journalist, Yasmin Coonjah, herself a speech winner at Kingsmead Secondary School, said, “I was delighted to hear such interesting and enjoyable speeches. All the contestants showed no fear speaking in front of 300 plus children who listened intently to every word. It was a very happy occasion.”
Geoff concluded, “Seeing Oakthorpe children speaking with such confidence and courage was so touching. It’s not easy to stand up and speak to a crowd of people. All the finalists are winners, I’m so proud of them all.”
