Trent Park will be closed
Date and Time of Publication:- 2008-03-27 16:31:13Trent Country Park will close this weekend of the 29th and 30th March.
Enfield Council decided to close the park for the second year running after it was unable to secure proper arrangements with leaders of London’s Iranian Community, who have used the park in recent years to celebrate their New Year.
Councillor Terry Neville – cabinet member for environment said: “It’s unfortunate that it has come to this, however the Council has been left with no realistic alternative.”
The Council has been involved in talks throughout the year with members of the Iranian Community to reach a solution but unfortunately without success.
Cllr Neville said: “It’s disappointing as the Council embraces and supports all sections of London’s diverse community to enjoy our parks. We wanted to work with the Iranian community to ensure they could celebrate the New Year’s celebrations as a safe, organised event.”
The Council’s concern was over the size of the proposed event, which has unfortunately caused extensive problems in the past with damage to the park and significant traffic and parking problems for local residents and park users.
Cllr Neville said: “We are being completely consistent here, as we would ask this of any organisation who would be planning an event of this size.
“Ultimately Enfield Council has had to take this decision in the interests of the local community and other park users.
“We deeply regret the inconvenience which will be caused to all park users and ask them to bear with us on this difficult decision and stay away from the Trent Park on that weekend.”
