Enfield Council’s customer care chief has welcomed new figures showing more residents are satisfied with the authority.

Councillor Ann Zinkin, cabinet member for customer services and communications said the results from the Ipsos MORI survey showing 53% of respondents were very or fairly satisfied with the Council – up 4% from the previous survey - was encouraging. Dissatisfaction fell from 27% in 2005 to 18% last year.

She said: “Certainly this is good news and shows the Council is on the right track in delivering good quality, value for money services for residents but there is still some way to go.

“Enfield Council is determined to provide the best services money can buy in the country and we will not let up in our quest for excellence.”

The 2007 poll, surveyed 1,026 residents in Enfield.

The poll also revealed more people were happy living in the borough with 74% of respondents satisfied with Enfield as a place to live – up 3% from 2005. Satisfaction for street cleaning, litter collections, road and pavement maintenance all increased, reflecting the investment made in these services. In other services the picture was more mixed, mainly due to more people expressing no opinion.

There were mixed messages on the issue of crime, which was identified as the biggest reason for residents’ dissatisfaction at 20%, although this has improved since 2005. There were big increases in people feeling safer, with 92% feeling safe during the day – placing Enfield among the best in London. After dark the increase was 20% - with 52% saying they felt safe.

Enfield Council leader Mike Rye, said the authority would continue to work with the police to make Enfield safer.

He said: “The Council will continue to support the police in their work in making Enfield one of the safest boroughs in London. We will also continue to invest heavily in providing comprehensive youth activities and will not hesitate in calling for the government to ensure tougher sentencing for violent crime.”
