Progress continues at key stage three

Achievement and attainment tables published this week show that students in Enfield schools are maintaining steady progress at age 14.

With an average of 3% improvement points for 2007 in the level 5+ English and Science tests on the 2006 results, this is a favourable comparison with the national improvement of 1 percentage point in these subjects.

In mathematics, Enfield’s results are the same as 2006 while nationally results fell by 1 percentage point.

At level 6 and above results have fallen nationally in all three subjects. However, in Enfield a greater proportion of pupils have achieved level 6 or above in science, but the mathematics and English proportions fell.

In the past four years the Enfield average for level 5 in all three subjects has risen by 14 percentage points representing 1 percentage point above the England improvement.

Although results have fluctuated year on year, the overall trend in Enfield is improvement with 14 of the borough’s 17 maintained schools achieving higher test percentages than they achieved in 2004.

The value added measure, which shows progress between different key stages 2 and 3, is expected to be 100. For 2007 Enfield achieved 99.8 – a slight improvement on the 2006 figure of 99.6. However, nine Enfield schools have exceeded the 100 figure and shown significant improvement.

Cllr Glynis Vince, cabinet member for education said, “These results reflect the hard work of the students and staff in all our schools. To improve year on year is a great achievement and is won through determination, hard work and, the pleasure that comes through learning.

“I wish all our students continued success for their future education, training or employment and thank the staff in all our schools for helping them succeed.”

Peter Lewis, director of education, children’s services added, “We continue to promote and support the Secondary National Strategy leading the way in a number of key initiatives, which challenge underachievement and accelerate progress, particularly in the core subjects.

“We develop programmes which meet the needs of pupils from ethnic minorities and those for whom English is a second language. Exciting and personalised teaching programmes benefit all pupils and have a measurable effect on their progress.

“This year at key stage 3 students are showing their commitment to hard work and are responding well to new ways that raise achievement and increase the pace at which they are improving. They have done extremely well.”

Lesley Mansbridge, secondary heads secretary, said, “On behalf of secondary head teachers I want to say well done to all our young people who took the tests.

“Thanks must also go to all our teachers and support staff who recognise the need to provide strong foundations for learning in key subjects which contribute to the continuing improvements year on year.“
