Enfield Council takes non payment of council tax very seriously, something resident Ms Elfrett Nelson of Cranford Avenue found out last week when she was forced to pay £8,400 to avoid having her house seized.

The large property, in Denleigh Gardens N21, had a Charging Order secured on it, which meant it was due to be sold to recover the costs on Thursday 6th March if Ms Nelson did not stump up the £6,300 owed in council tax. Plus the additional court costs incurred.

Geoff Waterton, Head of Collection Services said “So far this year we have recovered over £36,000 in respect of over six properties that we have repossessed for non payment of council tax. In addition to this we have also recovered legal costs of just over £18,500 .

“Everyone has to pay their council tax, and if you have the means to pay we will make sure that you do.”
