Leisure Centre on its marks for official opening

One of Britain’s best-loved athletes, Daley Thompson, will be opening the Edmonton Leisure Centre on Tuesday 18th March.

The double Olympics decathlon gold medallist for 1980 and 1984 will see the wealth of facilities that the new centre has to offer and take part in a short ceremony unveiling a plaque.

Cllr Paul McCannah, cabinet member for leisure, culture and Olympics, said, “Since it opened eight months ago, Edmonton Leisure Centre has attracted not only local people but many from other parts of the borough.

“It is a centre for developing sports and fitness, teaching swimming, encouraging social activities and providing a lot of fun for people of all ages and abilities.

“It is a great pleasure to welcome Daley Thompson to this centre. His Olympic performances in the 80s still inspire us and in opening this Edmonton Centre, I know that he will say some words to motivate and inspire new generations of sports men and women.”

A tour of the centre includes gymnastics, basketball and dance demonstrations, while public sessions in the fitness suite and pools and children’s activities in the soft play area will show just how much the centre is enjoyed.

During the day, members of the public can find out about the plans for the ‘London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games’ when the touring road show ‘Get Set London’ in the dance studio from 10am – 6pm.

Here visitors can find out all about the London 2012 plans explaining the extensive preparations for London’s Olympiad starting in August this year with cultural events.

The road show provides important information about job creation, opportunities for learning new skills and the wider benefits of culture, sport, business and regeneration.

Edmonton Leisure Centre has recently been selected as one of the venues

for inclusion in the London 2012 Organising Committee's Pre-Games Training

Camp Guide.

The Leisure Centre has been approved as a Pre-Games Training Camp for Basketball and will feature in the guide that will be given to National Olympic Committees and National Paralympic Committees during the Beijing 2008 Games.

The guide provides competing teams with a great selection of venues from which they can choose to prepare for the London Olympic and Paralympic Games. For more information go to www.london2012.com/news
