Help us develop our plans for homelessness in Enfield

This week sees the start of Enfield Council’s three month long consultation on tackling homelessness in Enfield.

The consultation will be asking members of the public their views about how we can tackle the problem of homelessness locally. Enfield Council would also like to hear views of those who have used Enfield’s services, or that of other agencies in the borough because they were or were at risk of being homeless. The consultation will also speak to social landlords, the private rented sector, as well as advice and community organisations in the borough.

Enfield last took stock of its homelessness service and published a Homelessness Strategy in July 2003, and the new consultation will contribute to a revised Homelessness Strategy for 2008-2013.

Cllr Matthew Laban, Cabinet Member for Housing said “Homelessness can happen to anyone at any time, and through no fault of their own. One of Enfield Council’s jobs is to tackle homelessness in the borough in lots of different ways. To help us get our service right we want as many views and opinions as possible.

“We have over 10,000 households waiting for permanent housing in the borough and over 3,000 homeless households in temporary accommodation, and the plain fact is there is never enough homes available owned by the council or by housing associations to help everyone who needs one.

“It is within this climate that we are undertaking this survey. What do you think we could do to help people find homes? Get involved and let us know.”

There are several ways to let us know what you think:

• Fill in an online questionnaire on Enfield Council’s website at http://www.enfield.gov.uk/homelessconsultation

• Filling in a questionnaire that may come through your door, or in the local papers;

• Talking to us in focus groups;

• Coming to our Spring conference;

• E-mailing us your views on homelessconsultation@enfield.gov.uk

The council will also be having a stakeholder conference in the latter half of May, which will be used to feedback what we found out during the consultation.

So get involved and let us know what you think!
