ENFIELD residents have been urged to recycle more cans and bottles in a bid to help conserve energy and combat global warming.

Councillor Terry Neville – cabinet member for environment said: “Enfield residents are among the best recyclers in London but all of us can and must do more.

“At the moment we are only recycling half the number of bottles we can and around 20 percent of cans we should be recycling – so there is plenty of scope there.”

Recycling can cut down on the amount of energy we all use: For example:

• 1 recycled tin can would save enough energy to power a television for 3 hours.

• 1 recycled glass bottle would save enough energy to power a computer for 25 minutes.

• 1 recycled plastic bottle would save enough energy to power a 60-watt light bulb for 3 hours.

• 70% less energy is required to recycle paper compared with making it from raw materials.

• Recycling two glass bottles saves enough energy to boil water for five cups of tea

It means if every resident in Enfield recycled one tin can each a week it would save the amount of energy it takes to power 840, 000 hours of television.

Cllr Neville said: “Recycling is not only massively important in conserving energy in environmental terms, but in these days or high oil, gas and electricity prices it is an economic necessity for the country and for family finances.”
