10th anniversary of Study Zone Homework Centres in Enfield’s libraries

In1998 Enfield’s study zones first appeared in the borough’s libraries and now ten years later children and young people are still using them as they prepare for examinations and their future lives.

To celebrate the popular success of the study zones, Enfield Council is inviting some of the first study zone members to join current and future members in a joyful event at Ponders End library on Thursday 5th June 4pm – 6pm.

Peter Lewis, director of education, children’s services and leisure, said, “This is a celebration of learning and the enjoyment and satisfaction that comes through it.

“Our study zones are purposeful places for inquiring young minds and have been a great support to families who have not always got the space for their children to do their homework.”

The five study zones across the borough not only provide peaceful areas within libraries – but they also contain reference books, provide access to computers and appropriate study materials for SATs and GCSE.

Children as young as eight can make use of the study zones where they will find helpful staff offering assistance, advice and support.

From their early beginnings with a membership of just 87, study zones now attract over 1,000 members as demand for this service has grown. Visits to the centres in this academic year so far stand at 6,255.

Parents and Study Zone members past and present will be celebrating in the Ponders End Library with popular poet Abe Gibson who will entertain with his poetry and present prizes to winners of the Commemorative Creative writing competition for study zone members.

Study Zones are open on selected weekdays after school and Saturday mornings. Contact individual library for details:
