Next Wednesday sees a very important event, which highlights the extent of hate crimes towards disabled people.

The evening includes a short presentation by people who have themselves experienced disabilist hate crimes at some point during their lives. This presentation will be by people who belong to a local organisation One to One through their VIP group.

The VIP (Valuing and Including People) group provides tailor made training courses around disability awareness based on personal experiences. They aim to provide people who have learning difficulties access to activities in their local community.

The evening also welcomes Daniel Hardy from Voice UK, who will talk about how victims of hate crimes can get justice.

Voice UK, founded in 1993 by the parents of a woman with Down’s Syndrome who was abused by a care worker, campaign tirelessly for the rights of disabled people who have been the victims of crime.

They also offer a range of training courses giving a positive, practical approach to adult protection, making sure participants know the law, and what to do when a crime has been committed against a person with learning disabilities.

Suj Ponnampalam, Hate Crime Coordinator said “We are delighted to welcome representatives from One to One and Daniel Hardy from Voice UK to our event.

“Many people do not realise that disabled people also suffer from hate crime. Furthermore, when a hate crime is committed against a disabled person, it often goes unreported.

“This event highlights the importance of disablist hate crime, and how vital it is that people report when they experience harassment or abuse, and that professionals recognise it.”
