Great qualities make quality foster carers

Focusing on the qualities needed to be a foster carer, this year’s Foster Care Fortnight 12th – 25th May, encourages people to recognise their own qualities and consider fostering.

Qualities such as strong listening and observational skills, a good sense of humour, optimism and resilience are key to successful fostering.

Cllr Glynis Vince cabinet member for education, children’s services and youth, said, “When people start to think about their own approach and attitude to life many will find that they already have these qualities and could become excellent foster carers.”

Sometimes what children don't say is as important as what they say. And when shared secrets of a difficult past bind children together, Enfield’s fostering team tries its hardest to find placements that don't tear them apart.

This is why foster carers willing to foster for the long-term or short-term are so highly valued.

Enfield has children from a variety of backgrounds and is looking for carers from a diverse community to meet their needs. Foster carers are needed for siblings as well as for teenagers and children with a disability.

Foster carers don't need any specific qualifications - commitment and positive attitude are much more important.
