Throughout April, flags from Greece and Turkey are flying outside the Enfield Civic Centre as the council takes the first steps to twinning Enfield with Halandri, a suburb of Athens, and Saryyer a suburb of Istanbul.

A delegation of principal councillors and officers from Halandri is meeting leading Enfield councillors this week and a similar delegation from Saryyer is visiting in two weeks time.

Each delegation will discuss common interests with Enfield and look at ways of creating valuable community links through education, business, leisure and culture as a basis for new international partnerships.

Enfield’s chief executive, Rob Leak, said, “Twinning is a well established way to build understanding between people. Many of our residents are from Greece, Turkey and Cyprus and they have welcomed this idea.

“As twinning plans progress Enfield will send delegations to both Halandri and Saryyer to firm up arrangements.”

It is expected that an official signing ceremony in Enfield will take place within a couple of months.

Rob Leak concluded, “This is a positive way to build community cohesion and enjoy and celebrate the rich cultural diversity in the borough. Local community groups are very positive about these plans.”
