Enfield Youth Observatory expanding minds

Pupils from local schools came together last week to discuss leisure and recreation activities available in the borough; and to get them in the mood they took part in a water aerobics lesson at Southbury Leisure Centre.

Feeling energised and refreshed they then moved on to exercising their minds.

The group of 18 primary children, led by 6 secondary pupils, discussed their ideal day in Enfield and considered how to find out the views of their peers.

Some pupils described their perfect day as 'socialising with friends somewhere safe', whilst others preferred to take part in specific activities such as swimming and watching a film at the cinema.

Whilst many were happy with the facilities on offer, some suggestions to improve provision included 'more things to do in parks', 'the organisation of local competitions and tournaments' as well as 'a go-karting track in Enfield.'

The event, organised by headteachers and members of the Children's Area Partnership and the Enfield Youth Observatory, allowed young people in Enfield to have their say about the services provided by Enfield Council, its partners and local businesses.

The ideas of the group will be used to formulate a survey so that more young people in Enfield are given the chance to share their views.

Pam Rutherford, Headteacher at Enfield County School, impressed by the lively discussion said, "This has been an inspirational day.

“We will be feeding the views of these young people back to the service providers who will then take them into account when making decisions about future provision in Enfield.”

Look out for the survey, which will be posted in the 'Have Your Say' pages of the Enfield Youth Observatory - www.enfieldyouthobservatory.org.uk
