Council to provide shop mobility in Enfield

ENFIELD Council has decided to continue running shop mobility in Enfield from the Civic Centre.

Cllr Terry Neville- cabinet member for environment said: “We have listened to the concerns of users and decided to provide a home for the service at the Civic Centre.

“As I said at the meeting we want to bring in the retail sector as they have a special interest in ensuring all their customers come to shop in the town, which is something that happens in many other boroughs.

“Unfortunately, so far we have not been able to persuade the retail sector but we shall continue to discuss with them the fantastic opportunity for them to play a valuable part in their community.”

The Council has now set up a users group to explore means of providing extra funds

for the service and assess whether an alternative, private or voluntary sector organisation who will be able to provide a service at the level required.

Cllr Neville said: “It has obviously been a distressing time for some service users and I can only apologise for any upset caused. However, I would like to reassure residents that the Council is deeply committed to helping vulnerable and disabled people in our community.

“The Council is spending £62.6 million this year in ensuring disabled people live as independently as possible and last year the Audit Commission praised the Council for providing good access to services for all its residents, including the most vulnerable people in our borough.

“The good news is that the cabinet has listened and the service will continue. Users will be able to receive the excellent customer care from the ever helpful reception staff at the Civic Centre, which the Over 50s Chairman Monty Meth praised earlier this month.”
