Practise and dedication paid off for Enfield’s Junior Disability Boccia team who became the champions in this event in the London Youth Games last Thursday 5th June at Westway Sports Centre in White City.

Ten youngsters from West Lea Special School in Edmonton showed both tactical and technical skill in this paralympic sport, which is similar to bowls.

They didn’t lose a game all day knocking out last year’s winner Waltham Forest in the semi - final and thrashing Harrow in the final 4-0.

Victory was theirs as they beat 20 other teams from London boroughs.

The winning pupils Harry Wallace, Lucy Frost, Joe Eoma Makumbi, and Lauren Morley were thrilled with their performance.

The senior team put in some excellent performances drawing two games against neighbours Barnet and Newham. Whilst beating Islington 5-3. They finished 2nd in their group and missed out on reaching the Quarter Finals by one point.

Disability coach Ian Reddington, said, “All pupils have been practising the game in an after school club since October and all their hard work and commitment definitely paid off as both teams didn’t lose a game all day!”

Cllr Jon Kaye, cabinet member for leisure, culture and Olympics, added his congratulations, saying, “This is a well-deserved success for the West Lea pupils. Boccia is a growing popular sport, which will be played at the Beijing Paralympic Games this year and at the London 2012 Games – let’s hope they have set a winning trend.”
