Home carers defy the snow

Undeterred by driving snow, wind and ice, Enfield Council’s home carers ensured that all 310 people who rely on them were visited on Thursday 8th February.
Typical of the carers’ devotion to duty is Kay Ryan of King Edwards Road, Ponders End.
She was up well before 6am leaving her house at 6.15 to make her first call three miles away in Baker Street, Enfield.
Despite not having full weatherproof boots, Kay decided not to use her car since the roads were so treacherous for driving.
“It was impossible to move the car at that time of the day and all I could think of was my first call. The lady there is in her eighties and was expecting me,” said Kay.
Without a moment’s thought she set off, trudging through thick snow determined to get to her first call by 7.30am.
That day Kay Ryan called on six people staying an hour in each home. On the last leg of her round trip she finally took a bus.
Ray James, director of adult social care and health, said, “We all know that this particular Thursday was no ordinary day. Kay really did go the extra mile to ensure that some of our most vulnerable residents could be cared for.
“Only three carers were unable to get into work as they live out of the borough – but those who did get in were able to provide cover for them. All our carers were magnificent.”
