This week Sport England published new figures showing who is participating in sport nationally, which also revealed ‘adult performance in sport and active recreation’ for each local authority.

The survey indicates that participation in sport and physical activity for Enfield residents has gone from 16.7% in 2007-2009 to the largest amount ever recorded in this survey which is 21.5% in 2011-2013. This is the equivalent of 65,520 residents getting active through a range of leisure centre activity, community sports sessions, sport club sessions or just exercising independently.

This shows that just under 15,000 residents are now taking part in sport and physical activity that were not doing so in 2007 - 2009. Enfield has come a long way since the 2007/9 figures and is bucking the national trend in terms of increasing activity in sport where nationally the figures are falling.

Cllr Bambos Charalambous, Cabinet Member for Culture and Leisure said “These results are fantastic. Our highest ever recorded adult participation in sport and active recreation in Enfield, verified by Sport England.

“Enfield Council is proud of its commitment to getting people active in the borough. We have a number of initiatives to get people involved in sport, from our partners Fusion who run a series of state of the art leisure centres to our ‘Everybody Active’ programmes which aim to get everyone thinking about recreation in the borough.

“This official recognition from Sport England of our achievements is great news, and really shows that we are leaders in our field in sport and physical activity in Enfield.”
