Benefit cheats cheat us all say Enfield Council

Published Tuesday, 10 December 2013

Enfield Council has launched a new hard hitting campaign to tell any benefit cheats in the borough ‘It’s not if we catch you, it’s when!’

Benefit cheats

The campaign demonstrates how Enfield is tackling benefit fraud.

Between 2007/08 and 2012/13 in Enfield:
- 97 benefit fraudsters were prosecuted.
- The total value of fraud prosecutions was £1,340,501.47
- The total value of identified fraudulent overpayments was £3,348,950.13

This comes hot on the heels of a 47 year old woman, jailed for two and a half years in September this year for receiving £27,092.75 in Housing Benefit and £5,050.18 in Council Tax Benefit fraudulently thanks to the work of Enfield Council’s fraud team, and a brand new case brought to book this week.

Cllr Andrew Stafford, Enfield Council’s Cabinet Member for Finance and Property said "This campaign shows we are deadly serious about tackling benefit fraud, building on the success we've had so far in cutting fraud in Enfield.

“On average fraud overpayments identified per year in Enfield is around £558,158 which comes out of the public purse. By working with our partners, checking all claims made to us and urging people to shop any people they believe who are committing benefit fraud to us there can be no hiding place for cheats.

“We are now waging a more professional war on fraud and have more powers than ever to take action."
