Home Secretary lobbied over metal theft

Published Friday, 25 October 2013

Enfield Council has written to the Home Secretary, Theresa May, asking her to make metal theft a separate crime category to help police and the council tackle the problem more effectively.

And this week the council also wrote to Enfield’s three MPs seeking their support for the request as part of ongoing efforts in the borough to stamp out the increasing practice.

Enfield Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment, Cllr Chris Bond, said: “Metal theft wreaks havoc with the work we are trying to do in this borough to improve residents quality of life and it is an increasing problem because it imposes extra costs on the things we try to do as we are constantly having to replace stolen metal goods.

“There are significant safety, disruption and economic issues that can be caused by items such as drain covers being stolen from our roads or cable being taken from railways and industrial estates and we are keen to see the crime stamped out.

“We would be better placed to tackle this issue if we could have more accurate figures on the level and location of these offences which is why we want metal theft to be reclassified as a crime category in its own right as it will make monitoring and eradicating this offence easier.”
